Manuka Honey has a distinctive flavour and a dark amber colour.
Manuka honey is a unique type of mono-floral honey produced by bees gathering nectar predominantly from flora found on the Tea Tree bush (Leptospermum scoparium), which is indigenous to New Zealand and the drier inland parts of the east coast of Australia. Manuka (from Māori ‘mānuka’) is the plant’s common name in New Zealand, but us also known as ‘tea tree’ in Australia.
Manuka honey has a darker and richer taste than clover honey and has strong antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Research has recognize that Manuka Honey contains very commanding antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties, making it extremely effective and may assist with a wide variety of health issues.
Our Manuka Honey is derived from pollen, naturally gathered by bees from Tea Tree bush natively found in the scrublands of New South Wales.
Methylglyoxal has been identified as the active antibacterial compound in Manuka honey and is shown as an MGO level. A higher level is directly related to greater antibacterial properties as compared to standard honey.
Diabetics – Manuka Honey may be a better choice for diabetics than other naturally occurring sugars.
Manuka Honey has lower required insulin levels compared to other sugars and produces lower rises in blood sugar due to the fructose it contains. However, all diabetics should always consult their physician prior including honey in their diet.
